Teleprotection and Transmission System PCM30U-OCH

Transmission system PCM30U-OCH is designed especially for energy networks and it evolved from a purely telecommunications multiplexer. This multiplexer was purposefully changed and gradually developed to be entirely adapted to the specific technical requirements of energetics. Transmission system PCM30U-OCH has long been able to meet the high demands of energy industry and provides a wide range of telecommunications and teleprotection services.

What does a power system require?

  • They are major arteries of life in today's society – they transmit high volumes of energy and require significant investments, therefore they must be reliable
  • They are geographically widespread and need their own communication infrastructure
  • It must allow not only to respond quickly to changes in supply and demand of energy, but also to disturbances in distribution networks
  • According to various degrees of development of networks, the demands on their flexibility and adaptability increase – e.g. for extension of distribution networks by new areas, new suppliers and consumers of energy
  • They are built on different technologies, respectively by different suppliers
  • They often require back-up  services at multiple levels – from transmission medium to a cable for customer equipment

Protection of power transmission lines

The energy transfer leads to undesirable situations, such as network failures due to external factors, network congestion, or excess of energy, which can lead to physical damage and financial losses.  Therefore all EHV lines are protected – on each end the protection monitors current, phase and other parameters, and on the basis of their values it considers the occurrence of failure.

Given the complexity and interconnection of energy networks, in order to protect these it is essential to have information about other nodes in the network than just a record from a place where the line protection is located. Therefore it needs to communicate – transmit information.  To disconnect a command must be sent – a highly secure binary information – that following the decision on failure will disconnect the faulty section through disconnecters (within 100 ms in the EU and reduction in time needed can be expected), and thus protect the rest of the network infrastructure from failure spread.

Generator Phasing to the grid

If the generator disconnects from the grid, whether because of failure, maintenance, or energy excess in the network, one must re-connect it very carefully.  This sensitive process requires knowledge of the frequency and phase of the grid.  In order to synchronize the phases of the grid and the generator, specific information about the network must be available.  It is fully the responsibility of the network operator to ensure phasing through the communication between the energy supplier and the grid not only with the operators, but also at the level of commands to connect or disconnect the generator and lines.

Unmanned operation of substations

To minimize costs, many grid substations are converted to unmanned operation. The network operator obtains all relevant information from sensors in the substation, and also confirmation of condition visually (e.g. that the  switchgear is really switched) by transmitting images – video.

Communications Infrastructure

Geographically large network requires adequate allocation of staff, as well as traditional telecommunications services, services of IP telephony, data transmission, Ethernet etc. These services you can lease at a high rate from telecommunications providers or you can use your own transmission paths and then offer the excess capacity to others, the transmission system PCM30U-OCH can meet all your requirements with ease and provide transmission in a single pair of optical fibers, or via radio link.

What can the transmission system PCM30U-OCH do?

  • Ensures the communication of protections from world's leading manufacturers (local connection to the protection via optical cable with the protocol provided by the manufacturer of the protection)
  • Transmits information about voltage and phase of 50/60 Hz
  • Transfers of the conditions of switches and brakers, highly secure commands to turn on / off lines or generator
  • Ensures transfer by building backup paths at multiple levels
  • Provides traditional telecommunications services (data, voice, Ethernet)
  • Adapts to non-standard interfaces, technological and financial possibilities (PDH, SDH, Ethernet) with an experienced development team
  • Links PBX, computer networks
  • Creates a hotline, connects a remote participant to PBX, establishes a conference
  • In one frame, it concentrates up to 120 telephone or data channels or  up to 120 high-security commands
